christmas part 2: AUSTIN

after our lunch in seguin, we drove back to austin and went to adam's parents' house for dinner.
adam's mom made me homemade soup so i could eat too! delish.
the precious princess and her grandparents
a happy family. such a happy baby!
us with a "U" for our apartment. got to love your initials.
what i/we got summer. it's a plate with her name on it and what she will look like when her hair grows out!

i am moving up in the world. i made it on santa's good list this year. this santa was in front of adam's grandfather's house when he was alive so it's an heirloom of sorts! heh.

christmas part 1: SEGUIN

adam and i started off celebrating christmas in seguin. christmas eve is when i started to feel worse. i, of course wouldn't miss celebrating christmas. so, excuse the pictures....i am smiling the best i can! Align Center

on christmas eve, we went to church and then to my aunt and uncle's to celebrate with all of the raetzsch's.

the raetzsch cousins.

on christmas day, we woke up and opened gifts at my parents' house. here's my stash of presents. i was very lucky this christmas...i got a lot of nice gifts including a new pair of emu boots from my parents! they are so comfy.
my favorite gifts were the donations made in my name...a heifer from my parents to a village in africa, a clothing donation to world vision from my brother ted, and a donation to the children's defense fund, an organization to help poor children in the u.s.
my aunt nancy, my mom's sister, made a needle point stocking for adam. needle point takes a LONG time! thank you SO much, nancy!!!
on christmas day, we ate a special christmas meal, turkey and everything else that goes with it. (well, actually, i didn't, everyone else did though). i ate green pudding instead. tasty, huh? on another note, i love the table setting that my mom and i set out for lunch.
i bought crackers to put on everybody's plate. christmas crackers are huge in england. they are so much fun, too! you "crack" them open and inside are the following: a joke to share with your company, a crown to wear and a goody to keep (sometimes a toy such as a christmas puzzle, sometimes an ornament, etc.)
i loved seeing everyone with their crowns on! ironically, my brother ted and adam were the only two with a pink one.
it's a great conversation piece.
this is definitely something that i want to consider doing as a tradition every year! cheers to crackers and to christmas!
stay tuned--christmas part 2: AUSTIN

getting better

hello everyone!

as you know, i have been healing after getting my tonsils removed on the 19th. i felt pretty good the first 4 days after the surgery but after that went downhill. just this afternoon, i have begun to feel better again! i can't wait to be able to get out of the house and eat solid foods again!

this experience has made me so thankful for my health. i am so thankful that my pain is only temporary because i know there are so many people that live with long term illness and pain. i am also thankful for thoughtful family and friends who have called to see how i am doing, etc.

here is a beautiful rose arrangement that my mother-in-law put together. i am very lucky to have such a kind mother-in-law! the flowers still look good after a week and a half. thanks so much, adam's mom!

sorrounded by the holiday spirit

yesterday was my last day of school before the winter break. today was the district's last day but i had a substitute today as i got my tonsils removed!
when i arrived at school yesterday, i was greeted by my fellow teacher and friend, jodena, with food in hand. she made dinner for adam and me to eat lastnight, my last meal of eating real food for 2 weeks. wow, the meal was DELICIOUS! i don't think i have ever been given a meal before (fortunatly, i haven't had a reason to) and it meant SO much to me! for someone to take the time to prepare you a meal, it makes you feel so good and special!
yesterday was our class winter party! before it started, i decided to take a picture of one of the bulletin boards in my room. i try to decorate it simple--like a winter wonderland! i have 4 wreaths in the room (3 of which are above and 1 is on the loft), a garland hanging on the loft, and "snow" hanging from the ceiling. i love decorating the classroom during this season!
one of the parents in my room had each student write a sentence about me and draw a picture to go along with their writing! she, then, bound it together to make a book. again, the thoughtfulness of something prepared and made just for you cannot be beat!
as class gifts, the class gave me a gift card christmas tree and a t00-cute tote bag from macy's. the parents are so generous and what a cute idea the tree is! i told the parents to PLEASE NOT GET me anything because i don't teach for the gifts; i teach because i love and value what i do. however, they insisted! i REALLY appreciate their kindness and support.
along with the book and the tree, i got some precious Christmas cards, and other goodies including homemade swedish bread (SO D-lish and still warm!), homemade chocolate chip cookies, and a british novel to read while recovering from surgery. these were such thoughtful gifts! i love Christmas cards so I especially loved getting to look at the cute Christmas cards from my students--especially ones with precious, family photos on them.

one of the parents is even going to bring me food while i am recovering! again, i am so thankful.
the kids went to 4 stations during our party. 1)here is the "reindeer food" center. inside the cute bag that each student made is a poem and "reindeer food" (oatmeal and glitter) for the kids to sprinkle on their yard. you are supposed to sprinkle the "food" on their yard making a trail so that the reindeer know where to go and can have a treat along the way!

2)a tasty treat--snowy trees! each student covered an ice cream cone with icing, then added toppings (red and green sprinkles, fruit snacks, marshmellows, and skittles).
3)ornaments. painted wooden ornaments with "snow" glitter on top. a parent is going to add students' pictures on the ornament to make them personalized. 4)"pass the present" game. the students passed a present around that was wrapped probably 20 times. when the music stopped while the student was holding it, he/she got to unwrap the present by tearing it once. inside were treats for the kids!

not included in the pics of the party: a class book exchange game. a different version of a tradional santa story was read and when the parent said the words "right" or "left," the students had to pass their book in that direction. they were in a circle. i was impressed that the kids could actually do this without getting too confused! what a great idea to learn "left" and "right." the room moms did a wonderful job at planning the party! =)

a fun-filled weekend

adam and i had a big birthday weekend to celebrate adam's 28th birthday.
we started out at manuel's for delicious fajitas and free birthday flan. then, we headed back to our place to make a gingerbread house. this is something that i would like to do every year.
here we are in front of our finished product.
on saturday, we ate a special breakfast treat on honor of the big day.
i think that smile on adam's face means he like it. or at least he's pretending to. hehe.
next, we headed to the hamilton pool preserve. it is a beautiful nature preserve in the hill country.
there's a natural water hole perfect for swimming.
i highly recommend the preserve for anyone who loves a scenic view and a nice walk.
then, we took a drive through the hill country (dripping springs, wimberly and canyon lake) on our way to seguin. when we got to seguin, of course we had to celebrate adam's birthday some more.
we headed over to my cousins's house to celebrate my cousin, michael's college graduation. here my cousin amy and i are.all of the raetzsch cousins. michael is the one next to me. congrats michael!
on sunday, we met up with adam's family to again celebrate adam's birthday but we forgot the camera! happy birthday, adam!!

have a holly, jolly AUSTINY christmas

last weekend, adam and i headed downtown for the lighting of the capitol Christmas tree. wow, it was a wonderful treat! even better, it was a free treat! you can't beat that.

adam and i in front of the tree.
before the tree was lit, there was a Christmas carol sing-along. there was a band who led the sing-along and they really good. all of my favorite carols were sung!
it was a "merry" feeling getting together with thousands of fellow austinites and singing Christmas songs in front of the capitol.
after the tree was lit, congress avenue opened up to artists and performers. this is a cool-looking car we saw along our stroll down congress.y
there were some very interesting performers!
and, of course, austin provided an artistic outlet for the stroll. chalk anyone?

rewind 1 year

adam has been gone the past few days for work and his computer is the one that i can download pictures from the camera, so i figured i'd post a picture that i already had on the computer.

here adam and i are last christmas at adam's apartment...you can probably tell if you look close because he had his baseball pictures throughout his living room. definitely, not under the influence of a female yet.

it was our 1st christmas together and sweet adam even wore the santa hat for me! bless his sweet heart!

cruisin'

adam found a great deal on a 5-night cruise to cozumel and progresso, mexico so we decided to take the plunge over the thanksgiving break.
merry christmas from the seas! i love christmas and christmas decorations so i was pleasantly surprised to see the ship "decked" out in christmas decor!
we loved getting to see the towel creations that were left in our room every night.
cozumel. uh, looks like adam got the wrong size boots and oh my, his hair is very different!
relaxing by the water in cozumel.
a view of our ship.
we also stopped at the port of progresso. at this port, we decided to go on a tour of merida, a city of a million people and less than an hour away from progresso. the city is known for its' european style architecture. the governor's palace.
a beggar. there were beggars everywhere.
the ceiling of a catholic church in merida. magnificent. built in the 16th century.

in honor of thanksgiving, i decided to do a little jiggle.
and another. (one of my favorite parts was dancing at dinner! hehe.)
on our turkey day.
our table at dinner. we sat with 2 other very nice couples, 1 from idaho and the other from fort worth.
we hope to sea you again soon!
