haiti

lastnight, i had a dream that i was in haiti.

this morning, i woke up and the first thing i came across on the 'net was a news article and video about haiti. i HIGHLY recommend reading the article as it puts the economy into perspective talking about how tragically hard 3rd world countries are being hit by our economy right now.

something else i love that this article mentions is how lucky we are to live in a society that has systems in place to support us.

  • we have public schools for all kids to go to.
  • we have toilets to use.
  • we have the knowledge of sanitation practices and how they can impact our health.
  • we have a government that was set up in a way to support business and industry; on the contrary, 3rd world countries are struggling to meet the basic needs of their people through agriculture because of a variety of reasons including lack of rou esources, proper training, and land.
  • our country does have support set in place for people that hit rock bottom and need some extra income (although it's not perfectly distributed as we have WAY too high of a homeless population and that is unacceptable).

here is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/29/opinion/29kristof.html?_r=5

  • you will have to register to the new york times in order to see the article. it's free to register though.

hilton head island, south carolina

after adam and i visited my grandmother in florida, we rented a car and headed to an american paradise aka hilton head, south carolina. check out the pictures first and then i'll tell you more about the place!
all thumbs up to hilton head! here is the bellman at our hotel, charlie. he was such a welcoming guy!
everyone rides bikes in hilton head. i loved it! it reminded me of amsterdam.
we took a ferry to an island that 200 people live on and can only be reached by boat. the island has an elementary school but no real grocery store or doctor's office!

this is where we stayed and it was magical especially for the price we paid--63 dollars, plus tax, of course, via hotwire.
the style of the resort and of hilton head was blue, white and red. i absolutely love those colors together!

adam and i headed for a few nights' stay in hilton head, SC. it is one of the most beautiful places i have been to...full of class, history, nature, and relaxation. it's a don't-miss of a vacation spot!

although there are many resorts and homes in hilton head, the town was planned to keep the area's unique nature preserved. even the turtles were thought of--hardly any streets lights because it's harmful for the turtles somehow (?).

there are no billboard signs. what a nice change of scenery.

buildings are required to be certain, subdued colors to blind in with the scenery or at least to not take away from the scenery.
there are beautiful moss, pine and oak trees everywhere. need i say more?

hello, sunshine state

adam and i just got back from a trip to florida to visit my grandma and her husband, bob. they live in a beautiful community (http://www.thevillages.com/) for active adults over age 55. my parents, brothers and my uncle from atlanta met us there.
at one of the villages' town squares. so pretty!
the six of us.
who are these people?
grandma and uncle bob.
after church. there is a lake behind my grandmother's church.
the perfect ending to our stay in florida. we went to a restaurant on the water to eat dinner and saw a pleasant surprise in the sky--the NASA shuttle on its' way to the final frontier.
it was great to see everyone! thanks for the great stay, grandma!

potato people, deadly housewives and moussaka

recent happenings with the unnasches...
we had a BBQ with our newlywed, church class at a beautiful house on lake austin and made these wonderful potato head creations! our group won the potato creation competition.
here, sam and robin are acting out a "skit" when our group presented our potatoes to the other groups.
the skit was hilarious! potato tarzan saved jane from a huge snake in the jungle and then, it was happy ever after!
"kiss the spud" potatoes
bride and groom potatoes. we are loving our newlywed class and the fun people we have met in our small group!
anna and i hanging out while at the "deadly housewives" murder mystery dinner. the murder mystery dinner takes place once a month at spaghetti warehouse!
the show takes place throughout your dinner.
i love desperate housewives so this show was perfect to grab my attention!
adam and i recently tried el greco, a greek taverna.
here are our tasty dinners. the all-meat platter (with tasty meats like lamb) for adam and moussaka for me. if you haven't tried moussaka, i highly recommend it. it's a classic greek dish. it's made of meat, vegetables and eggplant. sounds terrible, tastes de-lish.
i loved hearing the greek music in the background and talking to the friendly, greek owner! thanks for thinking of me and finding the restaurant for us, adam!
moussaka, anyone?
